Whether or not you’d like to admit it, I know the first thing you saw when you checked your social media Monday morning was something about Taylor Swift showing up to the Kansas City Chiefs game the previous day decked out in Red.
I would be surprised if you didn’t already know about it as early as Sunday, because everyone from avid football fans, Swifties, and even official accounts like ESPN and NFL were posting about it mere seconds after she was seen sitting in the private box with none other than Travis Kelce’s mother, Donna. The official NFL TikTok account even changed its bio to read “Taylor was here.”
This follows a long stretch of media snippets provided by Kelce hinting, maybe not so subtly, that he would love to connect with the pop star and invited her to the game on Sunday. I don’t know that anyone really expected her to show, even Kelce in his Wildest Dreams, but she surely did.
Unsurprisingly, the KC game was the most watched event of the week according to a tweet from Fox Sports PR. Also not surprising, the tweet stated the game ranked highest among female viewerships across multiple age demographics.
Don’t Blame Me, but I didn’t see the Taylor Swift-NFL crossover coming myself. What we can take from it though, is that sometimes, someone or something, out of the box can bring quite a bit of attention. ESPN reported there was a whopping 400% jump in Kelce jersey sales on Sunday, which we know had him feeling like The Man.
If you’re starting to catch on, this scenario can be applied to your small business through the form of influencer marketing. No, I’m not saying you have to try to convince Taylor Swift to show up at your business or be in a TikTok that’s going to be seen 10 million times. This is Me Trying to say if Taylor Swift can bring those kinds of new numbers to an organization with the Reputation of the NFL, imagine what a small influencer related to your business or based near your community could do for you.
If you’ve seen a product or service blow up on TikTok, then you know All Too Well the number of new faces an influencer can bring to your business can sometimes be astronomical, and when you have someone who has already done the work of building trust with their audience half of the battle is over with.
My prediction from the Swift-NFL crossover is that some people who have maybe never watched an NFL game in their lives will likely watch every Chief’s game for the rest of the season and maybe even beyond (I’m crossing my fingers for a long and happy Kelce and Swift relationship) because of this one appearance.
Call It What You Want, but sometimes all you need for a boost in engagement is a new face that brings a different perspective. It also helps if you have a little good Karma.
